PURKAL BULLETIN - MAY 2004 |
| |
Dear Friends
The initial month in the two schools saw the children settle down. Their first exams went off very well, with all of them doing quite well.
The Summer Holidays have begun and the children are now spending the entire day at the Village Facilities. We are utilising this time to help the kids catch up on their lessons, practice computer skills, handwriting etc. They are also encouraged to play chess and scrabble and read books from the Library (books donated by friends/sponsors). The collection of CD ROMs is another useful diversion - we now have 5 computer systems for the children (donated by friends and sponsors). |
We have had a bit of a setback as the unbuilt and unused building which we were offered to have our classes in is now under construction again. An alternative has been found with great difficulty, as there are not many places one can rent in a small village.
The highlight for the month has been the visit of The President of India to our neighbourhood when all the children were able to see him -a great excitement for all!" |

PURKAL BULLETIN JUNE 2004 |
| |
Not much scholastic activity this month as classes were conducted till 15th June only. Thereafter the children took a break to enable them to visit relatives - a necessary annual ritual. Thanks to the generosity of friends an old clothes summer sale was held in early June - this has become a popular twice a year activity and the village people eagerly look forward to it. In addition to the above timber and wages have been contributed by Mr. Chanchani for ten study desks for students - these are traditional ones used squatting on the floor and table-cum-bookshelf for the library. 3 computer tables have also been made out of this timber. During the summer break two outings were organised for the children i.e. - A trek to Sekar falls to see the water works - Visit to Lachiwala to see an irrigation network Both outings were thoroughly enjoyed by the children - a bit of fun and games in addition to learning. The children were also shown a number of classical English movies in an attempt to improve their English. The movies shown were Titanic, A documentary on London, Baby's Day Out, Home Alone etc. The children are also being encouraged to read storybooks and they have all been borrowing books from the Library put together by friends and sponsors. The library also subscribes to English/Hindi magazines meant for children. We still do not have proper premises to conduct after school classes - but we are managing with whatever is available and the new building will be ready sometime in August. More next time P.S. If you are still not receiving this monthly Report by e-mail, could you please let me have your address, by responding to purkalsociety@hotmail.com Thank you. |

The two schools reopened in early July and the regular routine of the classes have begun. The preparatory work is now towards their half yearly exams, scheduled for mid September. The results of these exams would be available late that month. Most of the teachers are making a good effort.
The general awareness of the group has grown with the habit of reading a 'daily' catching up with all of them. The "once-a-week" session on 'news' that we have has generated this interest. The Society now subscribes to 2 Hindi newspapers and an English paper.
We have also started a very short session everyday, 15/20 minutes of story reading, to help inculcate the sense of correct values. I select these and read them personally to the children. These session preceded by a short prayer seem to be having a very desirable influence on the young minds.
|
With the very heavy monsoon rains and the over flowing of the river, the children are being plagued with water borne illness of diarrhea, vomiting and stomachache. Drinking boiling water is not generally practiced due to the additional fuel that it demands and sanitation is poor, as many still do not have a lavatory in their home. As a result, the incidence of abstanteeism is now higher, although it is still at the 97% + levels.
The Quilt project is progressing satisfactorily. 9 women are now able to work on a regular basis and take home a steady monthly income. We are hastening slowly, so that the women already employed, continue to earn steadily. We are now better organised and I appeal to all the 'Friends of Purkal' to look for people wanting to own one of these exquisite hand made creations |

PURKAL BULLETIN AUGUST' 04 |

The most satisfying news of the month relates to the results of the 15 children admitted into the Jaswant Modern School this year. Most of these were from the group of weaker children, who were shifted to this school, from the quite ineffective but cheap school, called the S.G.R.R School that they were attending earlier. Only three months at the new school has made a difference to their sense of confidence, their deportment and their learning. The results now received are very gratifying. Three of them have a rank in class. Admittedly, the others are not close to the top marks in class, but their performances are well above the 60 marks many of them near the 80's. Weaknesses have been identified and remedial action initiated. Acting on a resolution of the governing body, we have now commenced providing 50% reimbursement of medical bills to our children. This has ensured that our kids do not approach a quack and follow incorrect diagnosis and treatment and get worse. A group of 20 children, short listed for scholarship selection in March 2005, will commence their coaching classes on the 10 th September 2004. They will continue until end Feb 2005, when they will face the selection Exam in the 2 schools selecting our children for scholarships. We expect that 13 to 15 children will get selected eventually. From the 10 th September 2004, our Society will have the advantage of another premises in the village for carrying on our work. This new building rented for a short term, has also land enough for a shed of about 800 sq feet that has been erected by us. The new building will not only provide the space for the classes which are currently being conducted in make-shift sheds, but also space for a teachers room to help them prepare. There is also now another room in which the children can read their newspaper and magazine. The Board which meet on 29 th August, decided to buy for the Society a beautiful piece of land located close to the residence of the Secretary. About 4000 square yards is being acquired at a total cost of about Rs. 5.75 lacs. The seller, a local villager, has agreed that after an initial payment, the balance monies may be paid before the 31 st March 2005. We now need support for the effort. We have budgeted nothing for this expenditure in the current year and therefore have no resources just at present for this purchase, we need support. The agreement and the initial down payment is being gone through with the help of a loan from one of the ‘friends of Purkal'. P.S. if you are still not receiving this monthly Report by e-mail, could you please let me have your address, by responding to purkalsociety@hotmail.com Thank you. Please note this new email address of the Society. |

The landmark news is that we have entered into an agreement for the purchase of the land in the village, to house the Society. We are now in the process of obtaining the necessary approvals and collecting the monies, so that the land indeed becomes ours. Donations are being sought since this purchase is not in our current budget. Any contributions are welcome. The deadline for the final payment is 31 st March 2005.
One another small improvement in the service to our children, related to the addition of one cooked vegetable in the meal everyday, supplementing the salad that is already being given. The meal given by us is the principal meal that the children eat and it appears important for their growth that this small additional expense be incurred.
I am happy to state that the general well being of all the children has improved significantly and that all are looking healthy and happy.
The half yearly exams for all the children is currently on and the results would be known by early October. They have all prepared sincerely for their exams and we do hope that we will witness satisfactory results. The new group of children meant to face their scholarship examination by April 2005 have also joined the scheme.
During the month a friend from Israel came and spoke to the children about his country. It was useful. |

PURKAL BULLETIN OCTOBER' 04 |

The month of October saw the half yearly results of the children, which were very encouraging on the whole. From this it seems that: - The English language is no longer a nightmare for the new batch. - The children are now capable of learning their books by themselves. - Marks in Mathematics are also satisfactory (they seem to have overcome the Maths phobia). - Science continues to be a problem and we hope to improve that in the future. The performance of some of the children has been exceptional (only the Scholar's Home ranks its children). Miss Neha of Class 7 stood 2 nd in her class, 6 others are within the 1 st five ranks. Most of the children have obtained an aggregate of 60% and above and only a very few of them have failed in a few subjects. Steps are being taken to work on these shortcomings. We certainly feel that our efforts are yielding fruit. The children went through an intensive two-week refresher session just before the exams, which has made these results possible. We had wonderful visit from Mrs. Vijayalakshmi Pandit's (the illustrious sister of our first Prime Minister) two daughters and they had an interactive session with the children on the freedom movement. In addition to this the children were also taken on a field trip to BHEL at Haridwar. The visit was educative and they enjoyed bathing in the Ganga in the evening before the traditional Aarti. This is an experience the children will not forget very easily. |

A comparatively active month in which the school settled down to vigorous academics, after their Sports & Founders day celebrations. The Pre-final exams are in December and there is active preparatory work afoot. A visit to ‘Virasat' 2004- an event highlighting Indian arts & craft was organized for an evening, to help the children appreciate the wide range of crafts that India is home to. Thanks to the generosity of the friends of the Society, all the children have been provided their winter uniforms. They all look smart, proud and well turned out. In early January 2005, we are proposing to take the entire community on a 8 day visit to the Punjab, to show them history, industrial activity, large scale farming and agro-industrial units. Some friends have already helped part finance this effort. More is needed. Any more support would be welcome. Finally, we have been able to host the Society's website. Please do have a look at it at www.purkal.org . |

PURKAL BULLETIN DECEMBER' 04 |

The children faced their Pre-Final examinations this month and the results show that the good progress has been maintained. The scores obtained evidence the efforts that the children have put in. There are only a few who are looking at the minimum grades – most are comparing themselves with the toppers for a self-evaluation. The current great excitement is about the 10 days travel plans that we have for visiting the Punjab in early January. Friends are helping to put in place boarding, lodging, transport and monies for this ‘once in a lifetime' experience for the kids. The fact that it is a cold, foggy winter just now makes care doubly important. More recently, I have been very concerned about our ability to raise the performance levels of the children to excellence. The great difficulty is the unwillingness of ‘good' teachers to come to the village from the city everyday. The untrained teachers from the neighbourhood whom we use are often preoccupied with their career advancement and being part-time are not fully committed to the cause. I have therefore been attempting to find Corporate funding of about Rs. 7.5 Lacs for introducing Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) techniques. I am convinced that a quantum jump in the performance and understanding of the students can be achieved if these methods are used. More recently, excellent software, targeted at these students has been developed and they are available. Friends of Purkal, can, if possible, help identify a Corporate sponsor for the purpose. A detailed project report containing quotations and costs are available on request, for presentation to any prospective donor. I may add that our website www.purkal.org is nearly complete and available. I would welcome any comments that you may have. Please do write. Your communications and support are the source of my strength. Let me wish all the friends of Purkal a Merry Christmas and a very rewarding 2005. I do hope that in the New Year I shall not be found wanting in giving my very best to the cause that all of you are so ardently supporting. |

The New Years day 2005 saw all of us, 45 children, 5 teachers and three in the management at the door of the Goldren Temple, Amritsar. For eight active days thereafter, thanks to a free bus from the Punjab Govt and the generosity of numerous friends, the children travelled through 400 kms seeing a variety of historical places, factories, farms and the Bhakra dam, one of the world's biggest. It was a very educative and rewarding experience for all. The children have grown several inches with the trip. Some of the photographs taken during the trip have been added to the " Punjab Trip Gallery " on the website. Early March 2005 is time for the final examination. We have confined the five in class 10, into a house for the period until their exams. They are being closely supervised and supported, so that they could do well. All the rest are now in the examination preparation mode. The group that was being prepared for admission into the two schools under our scheme, have begun to appear for their qualification tests. We will soon know about how many more will add to our responsibilities in the coming year. We will then need to assemble the required monetary support. I am sure that everyone will help. |

PURKAL BULLETIN FEBRUARY' 05 |

The year's final exams commence in early March and last through the month. This month has therefore been anxious time for both students and teachers. Five will take the 10th Board exams this month. 11 new children are now joining the Trust and becoming our responsibility. All these were part of a group of 20 whom we selected 6 months ago and trained for the entrance for the Scholarship test. The children selected have a high degree of motivation, are capable and hailing from very poor families. They should all do well and succeed in life. Thanks to the munificence of one of the friends of the Society, arrangements are now being made to train 6 girls from the community, who have completed their 10+2 exams in job-related skills. They will pursue Professional programme at the ONGC Technical Training Institute. While 4 would pursue a 2-year course in Office Management & Secretarial Practices, 2 would do a year's course in Textile Designing. The latter would hopefully support the Society's Quilt making programme in due course, while the former group would become Secretarial Assistants, a tribe much in demand by the growing Corporate community. These girls would be given unsecured loans, to be repaid when they become able. |

Dr. Amrita Dass, noted career consultant, spent time with the children. These sessions are helping children develop focus on their career goals. We wish to record our gratitude to Dr. Dass for her free time and for the interest that she has been taking in the growth of these children. The Society's Web Site (www.purkal.org) now carries this year's Annual Report as well as a Vision Document for the next five years. I invite you to kindly read them. If you wish a hard copy, please do ask for it. The new session of the two schools reopen in early April. We have managed to pay all the fees related to admission, the purchase of uniforms, books etc. The Eleven new children have thus become part of our scheme. We request all contributors to please send in their annual cheques so that our bills for 2005-06 are indeed met in time. Our budget for the period 2005-06 indicates that for meeting operational costs we need about Rs.10 Lacs during the period. |

PURKAL BULLETIN APRIL' 05 |

The results of the final examination held in March 2005 have been received from both the schools that our children attend. The comments of the teachers make it clear that: • All of them have been putting in effort • They now understand the subject without much help • They are building on the fundamentals and learning the Importance of consistent effort. These children, who were hardly able to comprehend their learning when they joined us, can now express their ideas confidently in English. They have become interactive in class and developing interest and excitement in science, history and geography. Having rescheduled their post school study hours, they are cultivating the habit of reading small books, magazines and newspapers. An analysis of their result is also interesting. All have shown improvement in the aggregate marks - some as much as 15%. Out of the 40 who are with us (not counting the 5, who have appeared in the 10 th Board). • 7 Children have obtained above 80% in the final exam (2 of them are above 90%). • 12 Children between 70 to 80% • 17 Children between 60 to 70% • 4 Children are just below 60% We expect them all to improve further and do better this year. Due to the addition of 11 new children in the new session, the Society has procured the services of an additional school bus from April. With this all the children are able to get to school and also depart from school on time - they were earlier dependant on the erratic government run village bus!! After protracted efforts a piece of land has been purchased and registered in the name of the Society. This was possible due to the generosity of our friends plus an interest free loan of Rs.1.8 Lacs, which needs to be repaid. We hope one day to have a small community center to cater to the needs of our children and the Women's quilt making project!!! To this end may I appeal to all "Friends of Purkal" to garner support from friends. |

The summer vacations have begun and time is being used to catch up with lessons, since the first quarterly exams are scheduled when the schools reopen in July. This time is also being utilized to build reasoning skills, word power and the ability to search out information from books. Familiarization with the computer is another exercise prescribed for the children. The Chinmaya Mission in Dehradun was kind enough to offer 30 free seats for our children in classes VI, VII and VIII to attend a six-day workshop on their premises. The children had a lot of fun learning music, dance, drama and most important, learning values. Our first batch of Class X children appeared for their CBSE Board exams this year and we are delighted to announce that all 5 of them have passed. Details as follows:
- Sarika 87%
- Neeraj 76%
- Rahul 60%
- Shakuntla 52%
- Amit 52%
These results have been achieved with the hard work of these dedicated children and their teachers and support received from all our Sponsors. We expect the groups that will follow in the coming years will achieve even better results since we are also learning over a period of time the secrets of better performance in the school! |

The children attended our classes regularly during the summer vacation except for one short week when everyone took a break – children to visit relatives and grandparents and teachers to rest and recuperate!! We now notice a great deal of enthusiasm in the classes since they feel that success in life is indeed in the grasp of those who endeavor. The reasonably good results by the 10 th CBSE batch this year has made this difference. We all owe a great deal of gratitude to the sponsors who made this scheme possible. May the Lord help us continue. The summer vacation was also well utilized for field visits to the following places in Dehradun:
- SURVEY OF INDIA – Children learnt about the Great Arc, Theodolities and the Global Positioning System.
- INDIAN INSTITUE OF REMOTE SENSING - A great experience as there were 6 different specialists talking about the application of this technology.
- DAINIK JAGRAN – The children saw first hand how a newspaper infact works. The visit ended at midnight after the dispatch of the edition from here.
- WADIA INSTITUE OF HIMALAYAN GEOLOGY - exhibition of ores, fossils and rocks and plenty more on the evolution of the earth.
- INDIAN FOREST RESEARCH INSTITUTE – 6 different exhibitions on different aspect of forestry.
In addition to the above we had a visit from Prof. Agnihotry from the National Physical Laboratories. She spoke to the children on the prospects of a career in Science. We look forward to more such speakers to help the children to think of their career prospects. |

The holidays were well spent and the children have gone back to school, keen to face their first exams for the year. During the holidays, the children attended our sessions every day, except for a weeks break. Apart from the regular learning of the text books, sessions were held on • Improving concentration and interest. • Tips for studying • Linear notes making • Making of spider notes/mind maps. • Tips for memory building/mnemonics and acronym construction. All these have helped the children improve the pace of their learning. Three girls from Britain , our well-wishers, spent three days with us at the village. They spent some of their time working on the above concepts and also held three sessions on ‘First Aid Techniques' – one for the children and two for the women of the village. It was very useful education. |

PURKAL BULLETIN AUGUST' 05 |

The 30 th of this month witnessed the Governor of our State visiting us. He spent over 2 hours, initially meeting our quilting women and later talking to our children under the scheme. It was apparent that he was very pleased with the enrichment that has come about in the personality of all our children. The local office of the State Bank of India also took the initiative of donating 10 computers system, 10 fans and 10 tube light fitting for us, during the occasion. On the 26 th of the month we had a meeting of the members of the Governing Body and one of the important decisions taken was to set a Revolving Fund for financing children pursuing higher studies beyond the 12 th class. The idea is to make available loans to these children, so that they could return them when possible for our reuse. An initial credit of Rupees One hundred Thousand would become available in this account during the course of this year, through the generosity of the person who is setting up this fund. We would be happy to provide details, if any of our other friends wish to enhance this sinking fund. The children of the Jaswant Modern Sr. Secondary School received their 1 st term results during the month. Overall, the results have been very gratifying. We notice that the children are gaining in confidence as they move up into their higher classes and are able to meet their challenges better. Many among the group are making the grade into the top five in their respective classes. The quilting program got a boost with an order of 12 quilts from the Governor. We are hoping that the festival time of Dussera, Diwali, Christmas and the New Year will all bring in more orders – so that we can continue to employ all of the 20 women on a steady basis. |

The children of both schools have just completed their half yearly examination and the results are expected early next month.
I am delighted to inform you that post the Governor's visit on 30th August to the village, all the children were invited to Tea at Raj Bhavan. The Governor has announced a one time grant of Rs.50, 000/- to the Society for this academic year and its continuance from year to year would depend on the Society's performance.
We are glad to record that, thanks to the instrumentality of the Governor of the State; we have been able to obtain a sanction of proper toilets to 23 homes in this community. This facility is a joint effort of a Rotary Club and the Governor. It is a scheme in which the owner provides the labour and the donor would provide the materials and technical know-how. This facility is expected to be available to the families for use by December this year.
Work has started in identifying potential students who will join our scheme in Class VI for the academic year 2006/07. So far 20 children have been identified for this purpose and classes for preparing them for the entrance examination into the 2 schools offering us scholarships (i.e. Scholars Home and Jaswant Modern School ) will commence in October. Only those children who pass the entrance exams are inducted into the Society.
In keeping with the objective of the Revolving Fund, which has now been set up, namely to use the monies to promote employment oriented programmes, a group of 15 students are being enrolled into a new 2 year schedule that we have recently commenced for preparing students from this community for the position of Office Assistants. Some of them would train to pass their 12 th from the open school and also train as Office Assistant's. Others have already completed class XII; we expect that all these 15 will gain an Office Assistant's job at the end of the two years. We are planning to help these children with vocational training since the first batch of children from the Society would not be ready for any vocational programme until 2007. Further, an industrial boom is anticipated in Uttranchal in the rest 2 years and numerous jobs would be created as a result and we are hoping that these children would be ready for these opportunities. |

PURKAL BULLETIN OCTOBER' 05 |

The half yearly exam results have been received from the two schools. To begin with, for the first time, we have two children who have stood first in their respective classes. Some others are near the top that is within the first four ranks. 11 others are topping in various subjects. Thus out of the 58 children that we have at the present time, at least 19 are outstanding and have the potential to excel. The rest are all above average or in their 70's can be made to excel, if their weak areas are addressed. This is exactly what we are doing presently.
Some of the children have also made a mark in extra curricular activities. Ankit Naudiyal of class IX won the second place in the District National Children Science Congress Presentation. Further there were five gold medals, 15 silver and four Bronze medals and three other prizes from amongst our children at the Scholar Homes Annual Sports Day.
The donations received are hardly matching our monthly needs and we are therefore in need of cash support. Any additional support that we can garner is therefore welcome. Could we request friends to therefore think of ways to widen the base of our support and raise money for the cause? |

Nearly one third of the children with us now enjoy a position in class – being either at the top or near the top; many of then standing first in one or more of the subjects. Two have stood first in their respective classes. This would mean that this group is indeed attempting excellence. More particularly, their confidence level, their speaking skills and their general awareness have improved significantly. They should be able to compete with their privileged peers, when they need to do this after the class XII level. Many of us would be proud to have some of them as our biological children.
At the recently held Annual Day event at of the Jaswant Modern Sr. Sec. School , 3 of our girls were part of the Dance presentation while 8 others were in other events. Ankit Naudiyal's name was proudly mentioned in the Annual Report as having represented the district in his capacity as a winner in the National Children Science Congress meet.
The village community greatly appreciated the ‘sale' of old clothes (marked at very nominal prices) that was held in early December. It not only gave them warm clothes but did so with their self respect preserved. We thank all the donors who generously gave us many warm items of clothing for women, children and men.
As the New Year comes to a close, we at the Society persevere with our work very satisfied, since we are of the firm belief that one needs to be truly blessed to be part of this mission which helps us to give generously. This is Grace, since to give we need not merely material resources but emotional maturity as well. It is the Lord's way of signaling to us that we have truly ‘arrived' into the purpose of this life. We applaud all those who have given so generously and invite others to join us in this assignment.
Wishing you all a happy 2006 |

The New Year is here and I am glad to report that some friends sent us gifts of cheques, others redirected cash gifts received by them and yet another directed the cash to us instead of to her young nephew/niece, only telling the young people the cause for which the money was given. We are deeply touched. Thanks to the initiative of one of our friends, the New Year brings news of a donation of U.S $ 35,000/- from a U.K corporate to help the Society build on the land acquired earlier. We soon hope to commence this work. This is great news, since the community will now have a permanent facility where we can address skill development all the time. We could now install computers and other instructional aids as necessary. This was not possible in the temporary make-shift rented accommodation which we used till now. We are also glad to report the successful completion of 23 toilets to as many household in the community, thanks to the generosity of the Governor of Uttranchal and the instrumentality of our Society. With this, yet another basic need of this community has been fulfilled. Good work was done by the children during the winter vacation. Special efforts were made to improve their ability to handle English; some new experiments were tried in the matter of learning Mathematics. The children also used some of their time to catch up on Computer practice. The schools have now reopened. 22 children from classes 9, 10, 11 & 12 attended a very professional programme on “Personality development” conducted by Ramakrishna Mission on the 26 th January 2006. This programme has been designed by the Indus Quality Foundation, New Delhi along with Ramakrishna Institute of Moral and Spiritual Education, Mysore . We thank all of them. |

The finals and the Board Examinations (for class X) commence in early March. Both the Teachers and the Students are busy preparing for the same.
A Bhoomi Puja was performed on the PYDS land signaling the commencement of the construction shortly. The Gods were the only invitees.
The State Bank of India in Dehradun has been showing interest in the Society (the PYDS bank account is with them) and this month they have sanctioned a one-time donation for acquiring a versatile multi-media center. This system networked with the cache of audio/video animated programme in the K-Yan (so the center is christened) will help the Society use technology in its teaching effort. We are very grateful to SBI for their generosity. |

PURKAL BULLETIN MARCH' 06 |

March has been a very busy month. The CBSE Board Examinations are behind us and we now await the third week of May for results. All the other children appeared for their final school exams and we would like to share the most satisfying comments from the teachers of both schools: - Uniformly we were told that our children were disciplined and regular in their work habits - One commented that it was a privilege to teach them. May they carry these qualities into life!!! An analysis of the results show that except for a few, every one has improved on their aggregate score as compared to the previous term. 14 children have received appreciation cards for their performance from their school. Almost all the senior children with us have scored above 70%. 4 of the kids got within the third rank of their respective classes. The percentage achieved by the children is as follows:

Special attention is being given to children below 70%. 15 new children have been inducted into the Society for the academic year 2006/07 taking the total to 72. Their admission formalities into class VI have been completed and books and uniforms purchased. Through a Friend of Purkal a UK based company has offered to fund the construction of the main building at the new site in the village. The donors during their visit to India spent 15 & 16 March at Purkal interacting with the children and the team also got the building started. It was a memorable experience both for the children and the visitors!!! We hope to have the Building ready before the monsoons and it will be know as ‘YUVA SHAKTI' – meaning Youth Power. A new logo designed by the children has been donated to us by our visitors from the UK and this can be seen on our website. During the very short break from school, the children visited 3 museums including the most modern one set-up by ONGC. We also had a guest lecturer with a programme on ‘MATH MAGIC' which interested and excited the children about Mathematics. The seventh year of the Society begins in April - we have come a long way with the help of all our Friends. 2007 will be a landmark year for the project when the first batch of students appears for their Class XII Board exams. We plan to support these children thru higher education or vocational training programmes. It is a long winding road but we have every confidence that this objective will be also achieved. This will not only qualify the children for a decent livelihood but would give them and their families' economic independence, a more dignified lifestyle and a useful place in society. THANK YOU FRIENDS OF PURKAL - WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE. We hope that some of you would be able to visit Purkal in the near future and see for yourself the progress that this community is making with just a little help from all of you. |

During the short school break after the final exam results PYDS organised an educational tour for the children to TEHRI. This was done with the help of the District Magistrate of that area, who not only gave special permission to the group to visit the power-house and actually see how hydro-electric power was generated but also organised for boarding and lodging overnight free of cost. The next morning was a visit to the Pant Nagar Agricultural University organised thru the Dean and this was followed by a short trek to the Surkunda Devi Temple on the way home. It was a wonderful experience for the children and a good start to the new academic session. Another holiday was used to visit the newly opened Museum - an ONGC exhibition on Petrochemicals and Oil Drilling - again an interesting experience!! Courtesy the Principal of Welhams Boys School, the "Stree Shakti" (the self sustaining ladies wing of PYDS) was given a stall during the Schools Baisakhi Festival for their "Patchwork" quilts. We now have 30 women working on this project and each of them takes home a regular income and this was a wonderful exposure for their exquisite handwork. I would request all friends to see the "Quilt Gallery" on our website www.purkal.org A gratis interactive session was organised for Class XI students with Ms Anjli Singh, a career counselor at Mussoorie who has been able to guide the children in carefully choosing their subjects. All of them now have a rough road-map of their career path and hence are a little more focused and motivated in their studies. |

The extremely mild summer was pleasanter because of the very satisfactory results that we have had from the CBSE Board. All six of those who appeared in class X, gained a first division and one of them had 85%. Their aggregate percentages are as follows:
- Poonam Joshi - 85%
- Meena Bhandari - 69.4%
- Sudhir Dangwal - 68%
- Himani Joshi - 66%
- Sunil Dangwal - 61.8%
- Sandeep Joshi - 61.6%
These children can only do much better in their 12 th . The summer vacations are being used for several activities – all of them designed to help children develop their skills. They are also participating in a sports camp organised at one of the schools, learning Volley Ball, Basket Ball and Table Tennis. With Gods grace we shell soon have these games at our facility. There is space and we have appealed for funds. The building complex at our new site is coming up rapidly and we hope to occupy it in late June. We are hoping that some of the ‘Friends of Purkal' will take advantage of the summer vacation and visit us, so that they get to see the project and the children first hand and gauge the progress that is being made. |

A heart warming effort by Mrs. & Mr. Sharan of Kuthalgate (Dehradun) through a Gazal Evening organised by them at their house on the evening of the 27 th May, collected a respectable contribution for the Society. We are so happy that they took this initiative to help us. A meeting of the 'Friends of Purkal' and of the Board of Governors of the Society was held at Delhi on the 11 th June. The audited accounts of the Society and a budget of Rs. 23 Lacs for the current year were approved. These documents are available for scrutiny and copies can be made available on request. The summer holidays are being usefully spent by the children. They have all been admitted into a sports camp being conducted at the Jaswant Modern Sr. Sec. School and being coached in one of three games Volley Ball, Basketball or Table Tennis. Excursion trips to several places of interest such as the Solar Energy Park, Sky watching with the telescope and a visit to the planetarium were the high points. There were also many hours of preparatory work for the quartely examinations which they will face in late July/early August. |

We started moving into the new premises after a solemn 'Pooja' performed on 09 July. I am sure it will take us about two months to settle down completely in the new building. Two boys from Class IX and VII i.e. Saurabh and Rohan Pal lost their father a few days ago after a prolonged illness. The boys are excellent students and their father died with the assurance that the Friends of Purkal would care for the education of his two sons. Pankaj Dangwal, the only student to have completed his Class XII last year has embarked on a career of Travel and Tourism and joined one of our friends in Delhi as a Trainee. Simultaneously he is pursuing his B.Com and B.T.S. programme supported by PYDS with some teaching assistance. Pankaj is a forerunner of a scheme to educate more PYDS students on these lines, if so inclined. |

Hiring good teachers to come to the village for all our programmes has now become a major effort. Fortunately with the help of Friends of Purkal (and every ones prayers) the Society has purchased a second hand Maruti OMNI. This will now enable us to pick-up and drop the teachers from the City and hopefully solve our teacher problem. Without quality teachers we would definitely not be in position to produce quality students!!. The schools had a warming up monthly examination in early August. The children have all done well. The new batch of class VI children are just about settling down in their new environment (it is a difficult transition from a Hindi speaking village school to an English Medium Public School). However with the help of our teachers/mentors the children are coping quite well and I am sure that in due course they will make a mark in their new place. We have finally managed to shift everything to the new premises and are in the process of settling down with of course quite a few teething problems. In the past we have been operating from incomplete structures/cow sheds etc and this ‘roof over our heads' is like paradise – a place to call our own. Once the monsoons are over we plan to start some outdoor activities for the children – the new place has a large open ground which in due course will be developed for sports activities. A lot of Friends of Purkal are yet to visit the project and we sincerely hope that some of you will make an effort to see for yourselves what your generous contributions has been able to achieve |

Purkal Bulletin [September 2006] |

During the month of September, we have consolidated our activities and also launched into a few new initiatives. Infrastructural constraints and the shortage of good teachers had begun to tell on the quality of the attention that we were giving the children. Thanks to the new building for Yuva Shakti - the education wing of PYDS, and the new Teachers whom we have recruited (now possible due to the increase in the Salaries and the transport being provided for their commuting) the quality of our work will now improve. It is the timely and generous assistance from the "Friends of Purkal" that made all this possible. In the meantime, the children have coped as well as possible with all these handicaps. Their half yearly results show that they have maintained their good work. All of them, except for a few exceptions, have done well, although their true potential is yet to be achieved. Everyone is now striving hard to reach self set goals. We now have seven students for our new initiatives meant to take our wards beyond the 12 th and into a career. All of them have joined the B.Com and the Bachelor of tourism studies Programme and are training to not only learn for these two degrees but also win practical insight into the business, thanks to the assistance of seven of our travel agency friends, who will take them in as trainees for 6 weeks each year for three successive years. The "Stree Shakti" wing of PYDS has also launched two new initiatives in a bid to ensure that the women working with PYDS are continuously employed. Gifts packs (aimed at Deepawali and New Year) of cushion covers are aimed at corporate and individuals. I am writing separately to all of you about this product. Thanks to the generosity of Mrs. and Mr. Kohli (Mrs. Praveen Langham's Parents) 6 women at Purkal have been trained by them in the art of making greeting cards with dried flowers. These cards are also now available for use during the festive season. |

As an introductory offer, we are pricing them at Rs. 700/- and Rs. 850/- for a pack of 5 quilts made in a size of 16" X 16". They come in 25 different designs. They could lend colorful accents to your rooms. Photographs of these designs are now available on the website. Artistic greeting cards (meant to be used during the current festive season) with dried flowers and laminated are also now available. They are priced at Rs. 20/- a piece. We would request friends to buy these, ordering a packet of 10 cards per pack. Photographs of these are also available on the website. |

Purkal Bulletin [ October 2006] |

The most satisfying news to report in the current month is the fact that we have finally found the money for completing this phase of construction work that we undertook in March this year. The finishing work at the site of the building is now in hand and we not expect to have any more capital expenses after November. The entire project is a DREAM COME TRUE AND HAS BEEN MADE POSSIBLE WITH THE HELP OF ALL OUR FRIENDS each of whom put in a great deal of effort!!. A lady (who does not wish to be named) decided to help us and single handedly collected the last of the Rs.2 Lacs for completion of the present premises. WE at Purkal constantly remember that these facilities that we enjoy did not come easy and that we shall be doing justice to the faith that has been reposed in us only if we strive to prepare our wards for a successful and fulfilling life. We pledge to do that.
The other notable event is the partnership that has been welded between our Society and a Club known as MITR founded by some of the students of Hope Town School, Selaqui, Dehradun. About 40 children from this school have got together and made it their business to help the Society by sponsoring two children and they also readily responded to our appeal for the building fund and specially contributed to it. No mean effort considering that the girl volunteers did work in the kitchen, sold corn, painted T- Shirts for sale to raise these monies for us. All the 'Friends Of Purkal' should be happy to have these young friends join our family. We also commenced our regular Yoga classes this month. One of the girls who lives in our village has become a trained Yoga teacher (no mean achievement if one knows the rigor of the BKS Iyengar school's drill) and we have her for a teacher and our new building has a yoga cum assembly hall. We do believe that this is a good step forward.

Purkal Bulletin [November 2006] |

With the building work complete, focus is now on the improvement of the essential infrastructure. Bunding and bounding work is in progress on the land. We are also planning to have: - Sports activities for the children in the form of Basketball and Badminton Courts at the new site - A small Science Laboratory that can permit 3 to 4 children at a time to practice Physics, Chemistry and Biology experiments - Library - which is in its infancy - Computer Room – friends have generously donated some computers already and we look forward to some more so that more children are able to work on them. A small Tea was hosted on the 14 th of November for Friends of Purkal from Dehradun. They were delighted to see the new premises and have also since then generously contributed towards partial funding of the above planned activities. We look forward to the help of all our friends in completing the above activities. November has been a busy month for the children due to the pre-final exams. They seem to have done well – the results will be available in December. Dr Amrita Dass of The Institute of Career Studies, Lucknow was kind enough to spend time counseling the children of classes X and XII. (She visits Welhams High School twice a year and during these visits she always makes time for our children at Purkal). These inter-active sessions, even if only for a few hours, provide the children an opportunity to dream, aspire, set goals and then strive. High goals set with the help of these sessions become an obsession with the counseled and the hope is that they will hit the trees even if they cannot reach the stars!!! |

Purkal Bulletin [December 2006] |

The highlight of the month has been the half yearly exam results received from the two schools to which are children are sponsored. Generally speaking, there has been all round improvement. The majority has recorded improvement in the marks obtained and there is a perceptible increase in the confidence level. As a general observation one could say that while children are finding it difficult to accommodate and catch up with class VI, they grow in confidence with time. They do better in class VII and blossom in class VIII. One witnesses their full potential in classes IX and X. The transition from the village Hindi Medium to the better English Medium does take time. It is also true that some perform better then the others. All however, have responded well to the opportunity and should be able to translate this better learning into potential opportunities in life. All of us at PYDS are now gearing ourselves to the final examinations due in March 2007. Sunday the 10 th of December witnessed our winter sale of old clothes, Shoes, Utensils etc. These are given away at nominal cost, priced to preserve dignity. As friends are aware, the Society organises two SALES each year, one before the onset of summer and another before the commencement of winter. Both these events attract the needy. One might say that all age groups in the community are today warm and better clothed due to this initiative. May I appeal to all friends to pass on to us their disposable clothes (in reasonably good condition) any time of the year? They are all sorted out and stored, as and when received. Those whose gifts were distributed on the 10 th December were warmly blessed. Advantage has been taken of the holidays and many speakers have addressed our students. We have had a talk on Administrative Services from a bureaucrat, catering technology from a seasoned graduate of the Institute of Catering Technology, Bombay, on architecture from a successful architect and painting as a profession from a Professional Painter. Many more talks are planned before the holidays end in Mid January. |

The severely cold winter holidays were put to good use. Many more children are becoming familiar with the M.S Office Suite, and the bank of computers that we have are being put to good use. The new library is now operative. Every participant of our scheme is now a proud owner of a set of three library tickets and the books are now getting to be better used. We of course need to stock our library better. We had a few very informative and interesting lectures, using audio visual aids.
- Mr. and Mrs. Banerjee spoke on Mass Media and Journalism.
- Mr. Yashin made a presentation on life after learning Catering Technology
- Com. Srikanth Mukku spoke on his experiences as a member of the Atlantic Expedition
- Vice Adm. Sai Varma – Chief (Technical) made a presentation on a career in the Navy and spoke about how the Navy operates.
- Mr. Solil and Mrs. Cosima Paul spoke on Travel and Tourist
We are grateful to all these speakers and invite others to spend time with the children. Ten of our children along with our yoga Instructor performed with great credit on the 12 th January at the Rama Krishna Ashram, playing out “Samundra Manthan” through yoga. Accompanied by background music and a Hindi narration, the performance was well received. |

Thanks to the generosity of two different friends, we now have the following facilities: - • A room that houses a set of two table tennis tables on which the children can play regularly. • A small well appointed laboratory. The chemicals and equipment necessary are being purchased and we do hope that the Lab would start operating from early March 2007. Children of all classes will get to perform experiments and activities in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Further, we have received funding for putting up a basketball court. We do hope that this sport facility will be available for use before the summer vacations commencing in April 07. We however, need urgent funding for erecting certain retaining walls before the monsoons. The final examinations have commenced and all the children will go through it before the end of March 2007. During the last Session at School, the following have won prizes for the activities as mentioned.
- Miss Kritika Kumari (Class VIII) – second prize in the School English Elocution Competition.
- Master Saurabh Joshi (Class VIII) – Second prize in the school Inter House quiz competition.
- Rakesh Joshi (Class IX) – Second prize in the “On the Spot” painting Competition.
We are gearing up for plenty of activity during the summer holidays – lessons in computers, reasoning skills, quizzing practice, chess and scrabble. Along with the outdoor games and the academic inputs aimed at the new session, the days should be full and fruitful.
Finally, with profound sadness we record the sad demise of Mr. Lewis King, on the 24 th February 2007. He was a Dehradun born and bred Engineer and a great friend of our Society, He contributed his time and professional skill and helped freely in the design and construction of our new campus and the building.

2006/07 has been an eventful year for PYDS. The building donated by friends has been the biggest landmark contribution to the running of this project and ensures the permanence of the PYDS facilities. The availability of a spacious campus would now enable us to organize additional activities for the children. The final examination for the academic year is over and the results show that all have gained in confidence and shown remarkable improvement on their previous records. Their willingness to work hard, keenness to complete prescribed work, ability to express oneself have all improved – thanks to the focus and the emphasis in learning of fundamentals. Motivation to perform well is high and this is being reflected in better scores all around. The performance of the children, class-wise has been as follows:

The first batch of 5 children has appeared for the Class XII Board exams and we are confident that they will all ‘do us proud'. The 67 students have all moved into the next class and a fresh batch of 17 children have been selected and admitted into class VI – taking the total number of children under the PYDS scheme to 83 for the academic year 2007/08. One of our disappointments continues to be the absence of any visits to Purkal by a lot of our friends. Since we now have our own building called YUVA SHAKTI we plan to celebrate our Founders Day on a Sunday in May – this has been deliberately been kept in summer so that our friends from the Travel Trade would be able to join us!!! We once again take the opportunity to thank all the Friends of Purkal in supporting this worthy cause and look forward to your visit in May – it will give us great pleasure to introduce you to Purkal and also show what all of us collectively have been able to achieve – the Society started with 5 children seven years ago and for the current academic year i.e. 2007-08 there are 93 children i.e. 83 in class VI to XII and 10 being prepared for admission in April 2008 for class VI. |

One of the strategies to ensure academic excellence is to insist that there is incremental growth in the marks obtained from one exam to the other. This objective was achieved during the last year, with every class averaging the growth, some of them as much as 9% over the year. This record needs to be maintained during the current year. The new academic year has commenced and the first terminal exams are schedule for Mid May. The formalities of admission, purchase of books and all that goes with a new academic year have been completed. I am also glad to mention that several of our children have won prizes in the Elocution Competition held at the school in April, each of them representing their houses. Their names are as under:

Chinni, wife of Mr. G.K Swamy, has been holding art appreciation classes every Sunday, discussing the work of established artists in India. We have scheduled an Art workshop for these 10 selected children in early June, to be conducted by two young artists from the City on a voluntary basis. Another feature of the New Year is the Quiz Programmes on current affairs that are regularly held, weekly, among the students. This is an initiative meant to encourage the reading of the newspapers and getting involved with the events and debates of the day. The student community of the Society eagerly and enthusiastically receives this weekly event. With the New Year commencing, we are sending our request for renewal of Sponsorship and donations aimed at the New Year's budget. We do hope that there will be a generous response. |

The results of the Board examination for the current year have been received for classes 10 th and 12 th . All our students have done well in terms of everyone crossing 60%. A few have done exceptionally well. While this has given all of us a lot of joy and satisfaction, we are aware that there is need for constantly innovating and raising the deliverable bar. Lots of work has yet to be done, to build supportive systems and mentoring.

It is also a matter of satisfaction, that for the first time, six of our children at school have become office bearers of the School Council. One of them is among the four House Captains of the School and two others are Vice Captains of their respective houses. Three are School Captains, another important office of the School Council. We have also had winners in the Inter School Sports and The Inter School Elocution competitions from among our students. We congratulate all the winners. The five children who have passed out of the 12 th are being helped and are going forward with their education. Sarika has joined a Chartered Accountant and will train to become one. Shakuntala will pursue B.Sc (Psychology) from Annamalai University through “Distance Learning”; she now works in The Hopetown School, as a Principal's Assistant, is resident there and expects to become a clinical Psychologist in seven years. Neeraj Dangwal will pursue B.Sc (Finance) with ICFAI and will get in house help from us in his progress as a distant learner. Rahul Thakur is being admitted into IGNOU as a distant learner, to acquire a Bachelor of Tourism Studies degree, over three years. Vikalp, who aspires to be an Engineer, has been unable to appear for his AIEE Examination this year due to a major eye operation that was performed on him. He will offer this exam in April 2008. Distance Education has become necessary for these children, as Dehradun does not support a college, where it is worthwhile to spend time and effort. These Institutions do not seriously prepare the students for any profession. |

Purkal Bulletin [JUNE 2007] |

In early June, we had the annual meetings of the Governing Body and of “friends of Purkal” at Delhi . The audited accounts of the Society for the financial year 2006 – 07 were approved during this meeting. This document is available and copies can be sent to any of our friends on request. The Annual Report of the Society for the period ended March 2007 has also been finalised and is currently posted on our website. The children were going through their summer holidays through June. They attended the teaching facility throughout (except for a week's break) and were being prepared for their first terminal examination, scheduled for mid July, soon after the reopening of their school. In addition, a group of 8 children attended an intensive art camp conducted by two young artists Mrs. Nidhi Khurana and Mr. Ruchin Sony on an honorary basis. We are beholden to them. These young students are on their way to building up a good portfolio of paintings and drawings over the next 2/4 years before they complete their 12 th examination. A group of nine others (15-17yrs) attended a Personality Development Programme at The Ramakrishna Ashrama. All the children of our scheme have been enthusiastically participating in the training camp that we have been able to conduct for over a month for Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton and table Tennis. Coaches for these games are honorary and ex students of the Jaswant Modern Sr. Sec. School . We admire the generosity and dedication that these young coaches exhibited while giving their time and energy to our children. Several outdoor visits were organised. Visits included The Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, The Indian Institute of Remote Sensing , National Institute for the Visually Handicapped, Uttrakhand Renewable Energy Development Agency and four Industrial units in the Selaqui Industrial Area. There were three speakers during these holidays. Talks were by Mr. Khanduja (on C.A. as a profession) Mr. Kamal Bhagat (Business of Growing up), Gen Chander Nandwani (Communication skills) |

The summer holidays were usefully spent – the children enjoyed sports activities now available at the new campus. This time was also utilized for spending time with their Mentors and catching up with Maths, Science and Language. The students are now ready to face their second term with greater confidence.
The first term results, only after four weeks of effective classes, has given us plenty of information for both the Students and their Mentors. It gave us an opportunity to evaluate our strategy to identify and overcome the weak areas of several children and also to counsel both parents and the wards.
There were two Guest Speakers during the month who spent quality time with the children i.e.
- General Nandwani, a Management Consultant who spoke at length on ‘ETIQUETTE' and
- Mr. Yadhav Mehra from Delhi who had a working session each for the Teachers and the Students wherein he helped them to comprehend the Importance of planning, strategy and the concept of pursuing excellence through a well designed and effectively executed management game.
We are grateful to both these gentlemen for the time they so willingly gave us.
Four of the Students who have graduated from Class XII have chosen to pursue the Bachelor of Tourism Studies (BTS) Degree through the Distance Education Program of IGNOU. Four ‘Friends of Purkal', who manage Travel Businesses in Delhi, have very kindly offered to provide hands on in-house working experience in their offices during the summer vacations. In addition these friends have been generous in providing these young students support to help them manage life in the city of Delhi!! One of the girl students is a houseguest with a sponsor.
We are extremely grateful that this pioneer group has been made possible. We are also confident that the students will comprehend their academics better and complete their course in an outstanding manner. |

Purkal Bulletin [AUGUST 2007] |

For the first time in many months, our facility has all the teachers required in place and a teacher-training programme has been worked out for them. Experienced teachers from schools in Dehradun have offered to provide training sessions on an on-going basis. The first of these sessions was taken by a volunteer, Mr Tony, a teacher from Australia working with us, in the month of August. I am sure these training sessions will in due course enhance the teaching abilities of our young teachers.
We are indebted to Tony and Natasha, an Australian couple, both experienced and excellent teachers of Maths and Science. During their 8 weeks stay with us they have helped design methods to enhance learning of these subjects.
The half yearly examination for the year takes place in the second half of September and we are confident that the children will perform well. In spite of the very heavy monsoons this year the children's attendance has been good.
This is the first monsoon that the facility is facing at the new Campus. Since we are located in a hilly terrain we have had quite a few landslides. Extra expense has been incurred in building support walls to keep further land from eroding and to check future landslides. This work I am sure will carry us comfortably through the future monsoons.
The games facilities i.e.. Volleyball and basketball is being put to good use by our children. It has helped to break the rigour of the studying schedule. We would like to thank all those instrumental in making these facilities possible.
4 students who are currently pursuing a Bachelor of Tourism Degree with IGNOU did 6-week hands-on summer training with different Travel Agencies in Delhi. With this experience the children are now geared-up and ready to work hard for obtaining professional skills necessary for their future. We are deeply indebted to the FRIENDS OF PURKAL for giving the children this significant opportunity.
We need to record with great regret the passing away of one of our brightest boys in the VII class, Aman Joshi. He was all of 13 years and it is a brilliant life that is wasted. |

Purkal Bulletin [SEPTEMBER 2007] |

The Society has spearheaded an initiative for making Purkal and its environs plastic free. The children have actively participated in the work. Apart from the bins that we have in the campus for non-degradable material, the village has also five of them financed by the community. The effort will be on going.
I am glad to advise all those interested, that The Society now has an entity registered in the USA that makes donations to us made from the US Tax Free. We now request friends to help us secure donations from the US since this concession that we have from the Internal Revenue Authority of that country could help. Such of those interested in learning the particulars of this arrangement should kindly write.
The Society has benefited significantly through the assistance that has been given to us by Mr. & Mrs. Upadhyaya of Manas Manthan, an enterprise that is helping children understand and appreciate Mathematics instead of merely learning it by rote. Our teachers spent over ten hours sitting with the couple learning various techniques. We are grateful.
The Half Yearly Examinations of both the Schools have been held. The results show that the children have all improved their performance over the term. While there are individual outstanding performances, the overall result is one of satisfaction. It is most heartening to see the way the new children have all fared.
Miss. Anshu Tyagi a teacher who stayed with us for over 5½ years and contributed significantly to the Society’s growth, did us proud by first winning a selection into Emirates Airlines as a Cabin Crew and then as the most outstanding student of her class of trainees at Dubai. Her performance is demonstrative of the philosophy at The Purkal Youth Development Society - that the growth of our young teachers and their progress into life is as important to us as the shaping of the young student’s minds. Anshu joined us as an undergraduate, used distance study programmes and left us a well-qualified and competent postgraduate. |

Purkal Bulletin [OCTOBER 2007] |

The Society has decided to launch in March 2008, a new Scheme known as “Bus Them To Purkal” Scheme. 20 very poor girls who live in very backward villages in our neighborhood – two hours walking distance from Purkal, in the age group of 8 to 9, will be identified and prepared for entry into class VI over a 12 to 18 months period. These children are different from those whom we having been handling earlier, in that; they will not have had the advantage of any serious primary education till now. The financial requirements to cover the first year’s requirements of this scheme has been received from the Emirate Airlines, Dubai, courtesy the promotion by our erstwhile teacher Miss. Anshu Tyagi, presently working with them.
We are also glad to report that one of our other Ex-teachers Miss. Shilpa Bohra, has passed her Service Selection Board Examination and joined the Air Force as a trainee officer. She will be commissioned as a Flying Officer in December 2007 We are proud of her accomplishment and Shilpa believes that The Society has helped her to train for this competition. We believe that all our teachers are students in our care and that they should be helped to identify and train for careers even as we focus on the children and their future.
“Stree Shakti” division of the Society mounted an exhibition at Gurgaon for two days in an attempt to exploit the festival sale opportunity. Apart from recording handsome sales, several lessons were learnt to help us enhance the level of this division’s activity in the future. The Society has now decided to gradually enhance the numbers of its women workers in this division to 60 from the present strength of 35. It has also been decided to launch the construction of a new workshop facility on the Society’s property. An initial donation of Rs. 10 Lacs to meet this need has also been received. We are in need of an additional Rs.15 Lacs to complete this building project.
The board of the Society, which met on the 12th October, also approved a few other new initiatives to target the education of young people from this area. We shall report them as these schemes get implemented. |

Winter is with us. The evenings end early and the children are therefore compelled to walk home in the dark. This makes no difference to their keenness to attend class and pursue excellence. The report on the monthly tests held has since been received and the results show a marked improvement in performance all around. We should have very positive results in the pre-final scheduled for December 2007.
The playgrounds, the library and the computers are all being put to good use. Steady progress is being recorded in the number of children crossing the different milestones that have been prescribed to record progress.
During the month we have had two speakers addressing the children. Also, all of us were invited to an Odissi recital organized by Spic Macay. An Italian Juggler performed in our campus for the benefit of the children. The children visited the Virasat Exhibition, a major event in our city and four of our children recited their Hindi poetry to an audience at Virasat.
It was very satisfying to see about 10 of our children come back with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals from their sports day held at their school. The play facilities that we have here have given them enough encouragement to participate. |

There are now more miracles to record for posterity. Dependent entirely on donations, the Society grew during the year and established itself more firmly. We thank every single friend of Purkal who made this possible. Among them is a new Army Officer, donating from his first month’s salary and one of our teachers pledging to donate a portion of her salary every month. There have been donors of large amounts as well, many of them responding to our capital investment needs. Our new bus has now arrived, meant to bus the very disadvantaged children from their remote homes. May the spirit of sharing thrive.
Our attempt to help our children widen their horizons is yielding results. Sandeep Joshi of Class 12 secured a gold medal, participating in the International Informatics Olympiad 2007. Two others earned respectable State and International Ranks.
The results of the test held in December show that almost all the children without exception have improved their marks over the short period. The signs are hopeful.
Six students led by a teacher participated in a National Integration Camp held at Vizag for 10 days. The experience has done their personality plenty of good. 48 others are currently on an educational tour to the South of India. Generous donations have made possible these excursions. We do believe that these are important and necessary inputs in our bid for personality development. |

The event that highlights the month is the commencement of the “Bus Them to Purkal” Scheme (BTTP), our work with 20 poor, poorly schooled girls of our area. We should see all of these girls go forth into the world as successful professionals, 12 years hence. The present signs are all propitious. We also commenced an English-speaking programme for a group of about 20 adult women of the Community. This is a six-month experimental programme.
A zero energy-cooling chamber meant to preserve the vegetables intended for the mid-day meals is now ready and waiting for the summer (uses the principle that evaporation causes cooling)
During the short winter holidays, about 50 children travelled to the South of India. They witnessed the architecture, history of the area and experienced the culture, cuisine and life of this part of our country. Five days of traveling and 11 days of sight seeing got them through five cities. A large number of Donors, a few of them big, made this most useful exercise possible. Another Group of seven traveled to Vizag to take part in a National Integration Camp. The younger ones who were left behind had the advantage of being coached in volleyball, basketball and badminton. The sports facilities are now very well used and appreciated. |

The exam fever is perceptible. There is effort, but more importantly prayers and blessings!!! Preparatory work is in full swing for the finals for the year and the Board Exams that will be conducted through March.
The 20 girls under our BUS THEM TO PURKAL (BTTP) scheme have settled down. These young 8 and 9 years old girls are provided with Dalia and milk on arrival followed by fruit and our usual lunch. They also get a small nutritious snack before closing for the day. Just in one month the children are already beginning to look better and with this their lessons are also progressing well.
During the month of February the Stree Shakti women constituted themselves into 3 Self Help Groups of ten each known as PRAGATI, VISHWAS and AASTHA. All patchwork sales effected would be credited to the account of these groups. Each group member now makes a contribution of Rs.50/- per week into the group account. This is meant to:
- Cultivate their savings habit
- It will also help the women create a corpus for lending amongst the group members
We notice that since the formation of the groups, the group leaders are taking more interest and initiative. There is a greater sense of awareness and responsibility and we believe that a sense of belonging will happen over a period of time.
We had a follow-up visit from the UK Company that donated the funds for the Building in the village. They were delighted with the pace of the Project and a 5-minute film has been made on the work of the Society for presentation to their corporate seminar scheduled for late March 2008 |

For the first time a MEDICAL CAMP was conducted for all the children of ‘Yuva Shakti’ and also the women of ‘Stree Shakti’. With this we propose to have an annual comprehensive health check-up for each child in the beginning of each academic year. This would enable us to maintain a medical record of each individual under our care.
We would like to make special mention of The Special Secretary (Health) Govt. of Uttrakhand, Dr. G C Baunthiyal, Chief Medical Officer and Dr. R K Pant, Chief Medical Superintendent from the Government Hospital in Dehradun, who most generously provided the services of a Pediatrician, Dentist, Pathologist and a host of medical personnel for this occasion. Medicines were also dispensed wherever required.
Dr Vinod Arora, Eye specialist and Dr (Mrs.) Kalhan, Gynecologist also helped generously.
We hope to improve upon this experience in the future years and use these records to follow-up on the health of each of our wards.
Over the years we have been visited by a number of friends from all over the world – some out of curiosity and some genuinely wanting to visit the project and meet with our children and some to buy the beautiful, handmade patchwork quilts. In the month of March a number of donations have been received from some of these friends and particular mention of the following: -
- One English friends has collected all her weddings gifts in the form of cash and this amount has been sent for our cause
- Another English Medical student raised a sizeable amount by organizing a charity Event on the completion of her medical program
- Another group raised money over Dinner.
- Many many gave us cash
All this enabled us to purchase a 14 seater van to help our teachers commute from the City. Such acts of generosity steel our resolve to deliver the very best for our children in our care.
The results of the Annual Examination held in March have been received. A very quick analysis of the marks would reveal the following:
- Most children have improved upon their past performance and there is ample
evidence to show that they are striving to improve on their past results.
- The general performance in English and the Sciences have shown improvement but work still needs to be done in regard to Social Sciences and Hindi.
- Some children have topped their class in Science.
The new academic year has started in April and another batch of 22 children have been admitted into our scheme. As on 01 April 140 children are benefiting through our mainstream activity |

The results of the Final Examinations received this month have now been studied. It is heartening to note that the growth in the learning abilities of the children has been very satisfactory. Most children are becoming good students. We have also short listed the names of those needing special attention for improvement and some ‘Experiments in Dispersed Learning’ using the children themselves to teach their peers, is beginning to yield results. We do hope that with this collaborative effort of the students teaching their peers, all these weaker children will also do better in the coming year.
We have taken several steps to help children learn Mathematics through activities. Some equipments and books have been acquired for this effort and the culture has to spread through the organisation and efforts towards this end are being made. The idea of using activities to teach Science is also being given a thrust.
In our bid to provide children visual experience for learning, visits were arranged to the exhibitions available with ONGC and the FRI. Notes were made; classes held pre and post these visits to help optimize the Learning experience.
Mr. Rajan Brijnath has kindly agreed to hold a series of 7/8 classes for ten of our children to help them play chess with competence. The first of these classes were held this month.
I am also glad to report that the five students who did their Class 12th this year are being given work experience for short periods in the under noted institutions.
- Miss. Poonam Joshi - Placed at Lucknow; Courtesy Dr. Madan Godebole, Professor and Head of Department of Endocrinology, Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Research. This was arranged since Poonam wishes to pursue a Course in Bio Technology.
- Master Sandeep Joshi and Master Sunil Dangwal are apprenticing with M/S Tex Industries, Roorkee for a period of two months in their Accounts Department; courtesy Mr. Vijay Toley, Chairman of the Company. These boys wish to pursue a Programme in Management.
- Master Sudhir Dangwal and Miss Himani Joshi are with Exposure Media Marketing, Courtesy Mr. Rajiv Seth
Stree Shakti is making good progress. One of these girls has moved on, thanks to our English classes and our sponsoring her into a Para- nursing Programme, to become a nurse in one of the hospitals in the City. About ten other quilting girls along with ten others from the Community are attending regular English Classes. After a while all these girls will also be helped to learn Computers. The progress that these girls are making is heartening.
The new building for the quilting Division has gotten under way. Efforts are being made to assemble the funds required to keep this building effort progressing.
Finally we wish to record, that thanks to Sujit, we now sit in a nice office with eight workstations and comfortable revolving chairs. I must say that this is very good use for the excellent furniture for which he had no more use. |

JASWANT MODERN SCHOOL (most of our children are enrolled in this institute) celebrated their 60th Founders Day on 17th May with a ‘Sound and Light’ presentation based on ‘My Incredible India.’ Almost 35 of our children participated in this event that highlighted the past and future of our country.
Three of our children i.e. Rakesh Joshi, Rahul Panwar and Swati Sharma who have a great aptitude for fine arts are being sponsored into a special program for 2 years. This program is being conducted by Mr. Paul Damle, a renowned Designer based in Dehradun. The children will be under his care until they are ready to enter a professional college after class XII. I am sure with the right encouragement and guidance these children will achieve their goal.
The following Post XII students have been placed in various organizations with the help of Friends of Purkal for summer training:
NEERAJ DANGWAL – is pursuing his Bachelors in Finance from ICFAI University. He is currently working with M/s Fedders Lloyds in the accounts department. This has been made possible thanks to Mr. Brij Punj, Chairman of the Corporation.
POONAM JOSHI – has just completed her Class XII this year with 77% marks and wishes to pursue a career in Bio-Technology. She recently spent a month working with Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Research (SGPGI) thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Godbole from the Institute.
SANDEEP JOSHI & SUNIL DANGWAL are spending two months with Tex Industries, Roorkee as Trainees in the Accounts department to gain work experience. For this we would like to thank Mr. Vijay Toley, Chairman of the company for extending this opportunity to our boys.
HIMANI JOSHI & SUDHIR DANGWAL are presently working with Exposure Media Marketing and we have Mr. Rajiv Sethi to thank for this opportunity.
During the month the students have been taken on local field trips i.e.
- ONGC MUSEUM
- FOREST RESEARCH INSTITUTE (FRI) MUSEUM
- ZOOLIGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA
In addition to the above Educational Films are being shown to the students every Saturday. |

This summer has been rather mild and the children have had a good time attending the Learning Centre every day of their school holidays. The centre was closed down for one week to enable children to visit grandparents and extended family. The summer break was utilized for:
- Training by a games coach for the 4 games that we are equipped
- Art sessions for the selected few who have an aptitude for this subject
- Movies every Saturday
- Excursion to the Buddhist Park at Clement Town
- Visit to the Museums at ONGC, Forest Research Institute and The Wadia Institute
The good news is that 3 out of the 5 students who graduated from Class 12 this year progressed into professional programs with the assistance of the Society, details as follows:
- Sandeep Joshi has gained admission into the Institute of Hotel Management Dehradun after gaining a good rank in the Joint Entrance Examination held at Pusa Institute.
- Sudhir Dangwal has got admission on his own merit into the Graphic Era Institute of Technology, Dehra Dun. He has become very focused and wants to become a successful Computer professional.
- Poonam Joshi is joining the B.Sc Biology program at the MKP College and later aspires to do her Masters in Biotechnology.
- Himani Joshi is planning to join the B.Com. program at the MKP College and also do Spanish in a local well-established Institute.
- Sunil Dangwal wishes to join the BTS program and attend Spanish Classes in the evening
A few years ago these children would have never dreamt of these opportunities – this is what PYDS has been able to achieve collectively.
We are expecting 4 of our brilliant children to find acceptance from the Foundation for Excellence, USA (FFE) as sponsored scholars for the current year, thanks to their outstanding performance. The FFE program is managed by a group of NRIs in Silicon Valley. The criteria for this scholarship is that:
- They must fall within the Poverty definition prescribed by them and
- Then gaining of a percentage in the Board Exam, which is not less, then 85% of the highest marks obtained by any candidate in India
Some of our brilliant students have been getting this scholarship, which is Rs.6000/- per year presently, since 2005.
Special arrangements have been made to house 6 of the ‘Bus Them To Purkal’ children in our village for the period of the monsoons as the road leading to their homes is completely cut-off. Poorly housed many of them are falling sick and in need of medical attention which is being given. |

We were delighted to have Ms Sneha, a volunteer from Cambridge for 15 days for revamping and organizing our Library. In this short fortnight she put life into this important facility and also devised innovative ways to make the children cultivate the habit of reading. The effect of an active Library is electrifying and we are most thankful to her.
Another important development relates to our Society becoming a part of the ‘Leadership Program’ launched by the Global Leadership and Education Foundation. This foundation started by the Khemkas seeks to nurture leadership qualities in students. Four PYDS teachers attended a workshop at the Doon School and have now commenced administering the program in classes 8 and 9 at our learning center. One of our girl students, Sonali Pundir has also been selected to attend an International Convention for Youth Leaders at the Raffles Girls School, Singapore in November 2008. All costs connected with this experience will be borne by the Foundation.
Our children had an interesting session with a slide show on Afghanistan and the Cook Islands from Mr. Janoush (visitor from Canada) who has worked in both these countries.
In addition to the above Mr. Arun Mamgain made a very motivational presentation on the life at the Indian Military Academy – hopefully aspiring some of our children for an Officer’s life in the Defence Forces.
The first quarterly reports on the first terminal examinations are yet to be received. We are quite confident that the average performance of all the children would have improved.
We were fortunate to have an article written about us in the national edition of the “Times of India”. The BTTP class are growing and progressing beautifully. We recently conducted our second bi-monthly assessment of their progress in English, Hindi and Mathematics and many of the children have shown significant improvement in all areas. Our drive is to keep reinforcing the concepts with these children, so that they have no problems when they reach school. In the next few weeks we will be introducing them gradually to Science, which started today with a nature walk around Purkal.
Stree Shakti building is progressing although the funds for its construction are yet being collected. We are attempting to find donors. |

The Results of the First terminal Examination were received. It is heartening to note that the marks obtained in all subjects are improving with the familiarity gained with the English Language. Nearly every child has improved his/her marks over the past examination. More children are nearer their 70’s and many more in their 80’s and the 90’s. With the induction of mathematics teaching aids, the fear of this subject is also receding.
During the Board Meeting on the 23rd August when many of our Directors were present, we attempted to evaluate the skills beyond the academics. We noticed that the competence in General awareness, reasoning ability, skills in mental mathematics, debating in English and Hindi, understanding of Science, the Social Sciences and the general level of Confidence were all growing among a wide spectrum spread across classes, sexes and age groups. We appear to be moving along the right track.
Witnessing the BTTP group grow into confidence and Learning has convinced us that we need to pursue with this idea. We have therefore decided to recruit another batch in the coming year, i.e. in 2009. All these children are being introduced to ‘Bird Watching’ and with some exercises concerned with identification of the Flora of the area, thanks to a volunteer friend.
A beginning has been made with the training of the Teachers. Ms. Kusum Kholi handled a workshop on Teaching of English through novels. We hope to carry on this effort into the future.
The Society has inducted eight of its children into a regular programme for the teaching of Art, Design and Technology. The intention is to prepare these children for careers in Art, Design, Architecture and Computer Animation/Graphics. We believe that this step takes forward our idea of providing these kid the same opportunity that is available to those privileged.
Four more children have joined IGNOU’s Distance Learning Degree Programme for Tourism Studies. We do believe that this is a course that many in our Community can take advantage of. |

Purkal Bulletin [October 2008] |
| |
The event of the month was the inauguration by the Governor, Mr. B. L. Joshi of a partnership between the State Bank of India and the PYDS, to run a sales counter of Stree Shakti, every Sunday in the lobby of the Administrative Office of the SBI. Centrally located, it provides the clients at Dehradun a ready access to our different products. It also provides better visibility to our shop that will open in our premises at Purkal in February 2009. We have been operating the shop every Sunday since the 5th and intend keeping it open every week through the year.
The new building of Stree Shakti, being built at a cost of Rs. 40 Lacs will hopefully be completed in February 2009. We believe that this will help us employ many more women from the community and help them earn well.
All the children of Yuva Shakti have been introduced to the reading habit, thanks to the very fine library that we now possess. A ‘Reading Passport’ has been introduced to help record the books that each of them reads. Prizes have been instituted for a) Most books read b) The best reviews and c) The one who most influenced others into a reading habit.
You will recall that in early 2008 we had initiated a scheme called the ‘Bus Them to Purkal Scheme’ and 23 children with little or no education were taken in for a crash course. I am glad to say that these children have blossomed and now ready to enter Class 5 in March 2009. Guided by this success story, we have now decided to initiate a second batch of twenty more girls in the age group of 8/9. These children are being chosen from among several who have applied for admission into the Scheme. Specially designed activities are being used to test their potential for learning. Special attention is being paid to ensure that the limited number of seats reaches the most deserving among the poor. |

The Society’s name found place in several newspapers during November, partially because of the two children who left for Singapore and Thailand for their cultural visits. The references were laudatory and encouraging.
Thanks to the generosity of the Global Leadership and Education Foundation who funded the Project, Miss Sonali and Master Ranjan of Class 9 came back after spending a week in Singapore and Thailand respectively. The visit has done their sense of confidence a lot of good. More importantly, it has got all the students into understanding the need for being ready to accept opportunities. The Community around this village has also come to accept that poverty need not stand in the way of significant achievements. This small step has indeed been a great Leap for the faith of the people in themselves.
A well planned programme of training teachers is now underway with the assistance of faculty in-house and outside.
The students visited the Survey of India’s Chemical division headquarter at Dehra Dun and saw a photo Exhibition. They were also treated to a slide show and a movie on conservation of Heritage paintings and monuments. They came back much illumined. |

Shakti Kunj, the new building of Stree Shakti was occupied formally this month. All the women now have a nice work environment and we do hope to bring in plenty of efficiencies in the production and management of this unit.
Stree Shakti now has a new shop in the city and this will be called PURKAL HANDICRAFTS. This shop, located in the EBD Business Centre, Rajpur Road, will be operative from the 15th January 2009. It will be an excellent outreach for the sale of all our products. Our principal shop will be at Purkal.
The second batch of 18 girls and 2 boys joined the Bus Them to Purkal Programme on the 1st December 2008. We have been very successful with the first batch and are very happy with the progress that they are making.
Our Learning Centre, which is handling all these children and helping them to catch up with the learning that they should have done in five years in only one year, has been recognized as a primary school by the Government of Uttrakhand.
Scholastics Ltd. was kind enough to donate to our Society a set of 100 books in the context of their observing the “One Nation Reading Together” a programme in which we participated as a school. The habit of reading has become wide spread among the children and their ‘Reading Passports’ are getting filled up rapidly.
The Children visited the Asan Barrage for watching the migratory birds and also the Survey Of India Exhibition. They learnt plenty through these two visits which had several activities built into them.
The results received from the School after the Sessional tests in November have been very heartening. About ten of our children have earned ranks in the class and we notice that the levels of confidence have improved. The average marks have moved up and almost no child has recorded failures in any subject.
We would like to draw attention to our new Website that has been hosted on the 1st January 2009. Kindly do look at it and offer your criticisms. |

The year has commenced with a very encouraging and auspicious note for both the Divisions of the Society, namely Yuva Shakti and Stree Shakti.
On the 1st of January 53 beneficiaries of the Society embarked on an Educational trip to eight cities in Rajasthan. It comprised of 43 students, 7 teachers apart from Mr and Mrs Swamy and Mrs Doyita Dutta of the Welham Girls School. The trip was financed by a few friends but the greatest contributor was the Indian Army which decided to take on the hospitality of the Underprivileged rural youth and give them an experience that they will remember for many years to come. There were excellent guides organised at each of the places of tourist interest and the entire group came back with a lot of education, confidence and a resolve to do well in Life. A Report on the visit is found on the Website.
Stree Shakti secured an excellent shopping space for its products by contracting a rental arrangement at the EBD Centre – a place in the heart of the City. We will need to make this shop popular and well known if we should keep the wheels of production moving. With the new building having become a reality, we can now actively recruit and train all those women in the neighbourhood wanting to work and earn.
The other event of note is the arrival of 24 Computers along with a Big UPS. These are all modern and new unlike the older systems that we have. We are most grateful to the donor of this valuable addition to our equipment. We are now planning new initiatives for getting our children involved in this promising Industry.
The website www.purkal.org has been fully revamped and has a new face. It appears to have been well received.
This winter was warmer for 150 more in the Community thanks to the distribution of this number of blankets gifted to us by one of our well wishers.
The calendar for Teacher’s training has been active with Miss Kusum Kohli doing another session on ‘Marking and Assessment’. The Global Leadership Programme is making good progress with all our sessions having been completed for the year 2008-09 and a Career Counselling Programme has commenced with Mrs Namrita Pandey of the Doon School having commenced her sessions. We thank all three for the gift of their time. |

We now have the advantage of volunteers helping us with different skills. In early February we had Mr. Florin, a professional doing web designing helping us with training ten selected children with work related to Web maintenance. The idea is to have our Web site maintained in house. Ms. Charollette joined us in February for a period of three months while Ms. Catherine from Australia will be with us for a year. We continue to have the benefit of Mr. Guy from the UK.
The budget meeting of the Board was held and the accounts and plans approved. We intend an outlay of Rs.60 Lacs during the year 2009-2010. We have collected and spent Rs. 52 Lacks during the year 2008-09 and will be supporting about 170 children under our various schemes during the coming year.
Another development of interest is that the Ministry of Finance, Govt of India, approved a Project submitted by us under Section 35AC of the Income Tax Act. This entitles donors to our cause, 100% write off of the amounts donated without reference to either the amounts donated or the profits made. We intend using this very special advantage to gather and create a Corpus of Rs. 5 Cores over the next two years.
Our Computer Laboratory is now State of the Art since we have just received as a donation, and installed 24 high end Computer systems. We had a German for a month who helped us install and Network these systems. They are be input to good use with the assistance of a volunteer from Australia who is a computer Professional and who intends staying with us in our village for a period of a year.
All these systems along with the older 30 systems with us are being maintained in-house by our students who are being trained in Hardware, software and Web Maintenance.
Our Website now has a new look and we have received many appreciative comments. This was developed in-house and is being maintained in-house. You might like to see it at <http://www.purkal.org/> www.purkal.org.
February is the month for the Annual Examinations. Much has been done by way of Teacher training and Leadership development to make sure that academic excellence and holistic development are accomplished. |

Due to various reasons, we will be commencing from the 6th April 2009, our new initiative of managing a Day Boarding cum School Programme for children in Classes 4 and 5. This School will be known as the Purkal Youth Development Society School. The children will stay with us for 9 hours each day, 6 days a week and we hope to give them several inputs apart from academics. This long school day, during day light hours, should help us shape the children holistically and see them grow into fine citizens of the country. With this initiative, we should be able to provide good quality schooling, less commuting for the children and better quality of life to the children under our care.
As usual these children will get to enjoy a full diet of breakfast, fruits, lunch and an evening snack apart from medical attention. Innovative and creative methods will be used for teaching them the different subjects making full use of our maths, science and computer Labs and our Library.
M/S Godfrey Philips Ltd chose our Society for an award that carries a silver medal and Rs. 40,000 as recognition for Social Bravery. We thank the Company for this recognition.
Thanks to the support of a lot of friends a new 40 seater bus was added to the Society’s assets. This will help us serve the Community better since it will help the Women working with Stree Shakti commute in addition to helping the children travel to their school and back. We thank all those generous donors.
This month was also significant for the first Endowment of Rs. 5 Lacs that was made into our Corpus by Mrs. Caryl Dexter in memory of her late husband Mr. Robert Ryan, a good friend of the Society. We need to build this Corpus into Rs. 5 Crores. All contributions attract the benefit of Section 35 AC of the Income Tax Act. |

April is always a significant month in the Society’s calendar since it involves a new academic session and therefore new admissions, new classes for all our students with new uniforms, books, copies etc. All children have progressed into their new class. For the new academic year, class wise breakup of children is as follows:
BTTP - 22
Class V - 19
Class VI - 16
Class VII - 21
Class VIII - 14
Class IX - 16
Class X - 15
Class XI - 10
Class XII - 12
Total - 145
In addition to the above we continue to partially support 29 students who have completed Class 12 with us and are currently in college. The first batch of our three students will be graduating this summer and hopefully on to rewarding jobs.
Thanks to the generosity of Friends of Purkal, a much needed new 40 seater Tata Bus has been purchased and put into immediate operation for the new academic session.
We shall face significant changes in our staff composition. Some of our teachers leave to pursue higher education. Mr Guy Brickley, volunteer from the UK who has been with us for 15 months goes back early June. Guy has been a great asset to our project and much of the direction and shape that the project has now taken are to his credit .All of us at PYDS have learnt from his example of dedication to the cause, sensitivity, love for the children and constant striving towards perfection. I would also like to quote what Guy had to say about his stint with PYDS: - “the wealth of things I have learnt here have not only shaped my life, but helped me to grow so much as a human being”
We are expecting another volunteer from the UK to join us early June, for a year and Ms.Cathy a volunteer from Australia is already with us for a period of 12 months. These volunteers with their dedication are making significant contributions to our growth.
April has been an important month in the history of the Society with the commencement of the new PYDS School on our premises. We will run a day boarding model for nine hours for the primary level and hopefully nurture outstanding academic potential present among the poorest in our community and let it blossom into excellence. We need Divine Grace which we invoke and plenty of support from Friends for its success.
We also wish to record with profound grief the loss of a very dear friend of our society, who was also our largest donor, Mr. Manoj Kumar Swamy, at his prime of 34. We do not have words enough , to console his young family and his aged parents. We are all a miniscule part of the WISDOM of the Universe. |

We had gratifying results to report from the CBSE Exam conducted in March 2009.
We had 16 children and 2 Mentors from ‘Akanksha’, Bombay spending a day with us. This is a 15 year old charitable Society with a mission to impact the lives of less privileged children. There were many lessons to learn from this ‘Learning to Lead Programme’
Eight children were elected ‘Torch Bearers’ for the four houses that have now been formed. Perseverance, Youth, Discipline and Self-Control are the four houses with names that signify qualities that need cultivation. Hopefully, these torch-Bearers will help the Society give effect to the several personality Development activities that we are now planning.
Twelve children who wrote their 12th Examination this year were sent to different work locations in Delhi, Selaqui and Roorkee to gain valuable exposure to the work environment. We notice that they acquire great confidence and a sense of the ‘Real; world’ with this exposure. We are grateful to the friends who made this possible.
We had a very useful session on Drug Addiction Management conducted by Mr. Alok. B.Lal, DGP of our State. Many of our children visited the Farm managed by ‘Navadhanya’. This Institution is doing yeoman service. They help preserve a whole variety of traditional seeds and encourage organic farming. This was a great learning experience.
The Annual Sports Day was celebrated on the 13th May 2009 when there was enthusiastic participation from all the four houses. The competence of our Basket ball and volley ball teams is steadily growing.
Our first School Magazine has been loaded on to the website; please have a look to see our students’ wonderful articles, poetry and pictures. http://www.purkal.org/mag_web.pdf |

A Comprehensive Scheme for providing Health Cover to all the students under the care of Yuva Shakti has now taken shape. We hope to maintain on- going medical records for each of these children for the duration of their stay with PYDS – up to 12 years. Dr. Geethu who is a recent addition to our Community has kindly agreed to be with us twice a week for 2 Hours each day on a voluntary basis and will be supported with the expertise of Dr. Sebastian of Karuna Vihar. We are very grateful to both of them for giving us their time and skills. The 100 bedded Jan Kalyan hospital will give us all the support that we need in terms of medical care. We shall undertake investigation and vaccination with their help and with the assistance of the Govt. of Uttarakhand. We are already using Dr. Prashanth Singh for Dental Care and intend using Dr. Vinod Arora for Eye care.
The first Endowment of Rs. 5 Lacs has been set up by Mrs. Caryl Dexter. We have only 99 more to go for our goal of Rs. 5 Crores!
Mrs. Nanika Joseph, a manufacturer and exporter of designer Hand bags, brought two of her Master Tailors from Delhi to conduct a workshop for our girls in Stree Shakti in the skills of finishing a good product. It opened our eyes to the enormous possibilities of learning and we do hope that these very positive skill development programmes will continue.
The Holidays have been very usefully and enjoyably spent. Highlights include:
-
Mrs. Dayita Dutta, Vice-Principal of the Welham Girls School, kindly conducted Career Counseling for senior classes. This was very valuable in providing a focus to all participants.
-
We had the UNDP conduct a ‘Disaster Management’ Programme for about 100 participants from the village and to all our students in two different sessions.
-
The children have used the computers to complete their Holiday Projects. Special efforts have been made to complete the syllabus in Mathematics and computers. The NIIT was particularly helpful in assisting our 11th and 12th Class students.
-
The ‘Torch Bearers’ of the Society (The student Leaders) continue to help organize and conduct several activities, and grow as leaders.

The highlight of the month, undoubtedly, has been the development relating to iDISCOVERY’s association with our efforts in the Primary School Program at PYDS - this is courtesy COLOR TV CHANNEL on the occasion of their anniversary.
This Programme is managed by a Company in Gurgaon and is well regarded by those who know the art of teaching. It is an integrated Teacher Training and Curriculum Programme. It is aimed at Innovative Teaching and Experiential Learning. Toolkits are provided for creating an interactive and child centered Learning environment, based on discovery and experience. Already the first step, namely training of the Secretary of the Society as the Instructional Leader has been completed and all the other steps will follow. We are very fortunate to have been chosen for this free assistance and are grateful
The first ever Prize Distribution day was held by the Society on 18th July. While we did not have a Chief Guest, we had requested Mrs. Meenakshi Gandothra,, Principal of the Jaswant Modern School and Mr. Kesav Desiraju, Principal Secretary, Govt of Uttaranchal to distribute the Prizes. The students enacted a Play that highlighted some of the evils that bedevil our Society. The function was very well received and the newly built building of Stree Shakti was used for the purpose.
Stree Shakti now has a new Website. Please see www.purkalstreeshakti.org.
We have now commenced making a complete record relating to the health of all the children under our care. A specially designed book has been printed for this purpose.
Dr. Prashant Singh, Dental Surgeon and Dr. Vinod Arora, Eye Surgeon respectively have kindly completed the screening of every single child and the necessary dental/eye attention was extended to all those who needed it. Dr. Geetu, an Ayurvedic doctor living in our area has accepted responsibility for caring for all the women and the children and she has agreed to visit us twice every week for the purpose and does so voluntarily. She will be supported by Dr. Sebastian, a qualified Physician from Norway, currently settled in Dehra Dun.
We are thankful to the British School, Delhi who kindly donated valuable furniture (90 Tables and Chairs, cupboards and several items of stationery). Dr Pushpa gave us several used imported toys and these are being put to good use by the children who accompany mothers to the Stree Shakti Programme.

Purkal Bulletin - August 2009 |

Much of the month was spent on training of the teachers in the ways of iDiscoveri. As readers may recall this is the new arrangement that we have forged for revamping our mentoring skills. An intensive training programme was conducted by Mr. James and Mr. Tribhuvan from iDiscoveri between the 10th and the 14th of August for four days and it was followed up by a two day work shop conducted by Harwant on the 29th and the 30th of August. The latter workshop was intended to discover appropriate ways in which PYDS would adopt these methods to its own learning model. It looked intensively at how our scheme of helping students post-school could use these many useful ideas. I am confident that if we seriously put to use this help that has become available, our students will benefit greatly and pass out as very good learners and thinkers.
The children spent most of their time preparing for their Half yearly Examination which commenced on the 22nd August 2009.
There were two speakers this month, Mr. A.P.Oberoi who spoke on ‘How to Increase your Memory Power’ and another by Wg. Commdr. Hoshan Nariman Chargeman Re the Service Selection Board.
The children were happy to have two breaks that enabled them to prepare for their half yearly Examination. These were between the 10th and the 16th and again on Saturday the 29th.These days were used by the teachers for the training Programme already mentioned.
Two part time teachers were employed for teaching dance and Music to the Class V and BTTP children.
The Class rooms now look much better with the several Boards that are being actively used and worked upon by the teachers to excite the children on various subjects. Photographs of some of these Boards are attached.
One of our teachers Mr. Manish Chandel was sent to Poona to undergo training for a week since it is our intention to commence in our school a Chinmayananda Yuva Kendra (CHYK) Programme on a regular basis. We believe that this scheme will provide our children a good grounding on values and lay a foundation for their meaningful life. |

Purkal Bulletin - September 2009 |

There have been several interesting developments this month.
Kritika Kumari of Class 11 won the first Prize in the Essay writing Competition that was held by the ‘Friends of Doon’ Annual Tree Festival that was celebrated by them. She also had the distinction of being shortlisted as one of ten selected for the 4th Round in the Youth Power Programme competition sponsored by the Global Education and leadership Foundation. She did a 16 hour stint with Swechha, an environmental NGO, as part of this exercise. We are now hoping that she will get into the 5th round in this selection process.
The entire Community at PYDS celebrated Eid on the 10th September 2009 with the assistance of Mrs. Zarina, our neighbor. All of us learnt the Kalma recited it, learnt about Islam from our hostess, decorated the hall where the event was held appropriately and tasted Semia and dates kindly provided by our hostess. All this is part of our effort to teach tolerance to our children who are dominantly Hindus. While we attempt to be a-religious in our Society, we are convinced that we cannot ignore the demon that religion is. It distracts from the divinisation of the human which is what good value is all about. We have taken our children to several Gurudwaras in the past years and shall participate in a Christmas Mass this current year so that we can be part of that minority Indian religion as well.
Mrs Smita Patel conducted a very interesting Work shop on the Right to Information act and our children are now hoping to participate in this initiative that will see democracy in action at PYDS!
A Blood Donation camp was held on the 26th September and this was preceded by an awareness drive undertaken by our children among the villages nearby. We had a total of 25 donors and the sad part of it was that many of our Stree Shakti women were not permitted to donate as they were either grossly underweight or anemic. (29 out of 30 were considered unfit for the purpose). An awareness lecture for all our adult children and the women of Stree Shakti was organized on the 21st September.
The District Forest Officer, Dehra Dun has kindly permitted us to plant trees in five Bhigas of Forest Land and maintain them. This land is situated very close to our campus. The first lot of 40 trees was planted on this land on the 26th September and we hope to get the children involved with their upkeep.
The results of the half yearly Examinations held in August - September have been received. We are writing to all sponsors about the performance of the children sponsored by them. While the results are generally satisfactory, we are using these results to appraise our teaching methods and the gaps that exist, so that we could do even better in the future.

There was a lot of excitement with children participating in a ’Design for Giving’ Competition organized by IDEA in which we participated. The idea is to let children know that Service and sacrifice are at the heart of Life and that it is the art of Giving that is to be most valued.
The features of the competition as presented by us included a ‘Say no to Crackers Campaign’, a campaign for getting our village free of Plastic, and another for getting everyone become sensitive to the need for donating blood. We are hoping that we will win the competition, the results of which are expected on the 14th November.
Much work happened with the assistance of our Directors and several well wishers at Delhi about marketing of our Stree Shakti Products. Our sales have been growing steadily and since we are wishing to accommodate increasing numbers of women we need to establish our clientele. To fulfill the objectives of the programme which is to help women become self sufficient with a skill learnt, we held an Exhibition cum sale at the Sriram Bhartiya kala Kendra from 2nd October 2009 to 4th of October 2009. The Chief Minister of Delhi inaugurated the event and it was a great success, with good sales, lots of new contacts and plenty of lessons about the type of work that we need to do in the future. Other initiatives to improve our Sales in the future are also being initiated.
The fact that our children are fit and well were amply demonstrated when they won 9 out of the 12 Prizes in the Half Marathon race that the school held on the 1st of November 2009. Miss Raksha Rawat of class 6 And Master Sachin Joshi of class 8 won the first prize among the Junior category for girls and boys respectively.
We are glad to advise that we have commenced construction of an ECLC (Early Childhood Learning Centre) with the receipt of a Comprehensive donation from a Canadian friend for the setting up of the facility. This is meant for the 2Plus, 3 Plus and 4 Plus age groups of children. It will essentially cater to the needs of the women working in the Stree Shakti Division of the Society. The facility should be operative early next year. |

The finest news that we have this year is the accreditation that we have received from the Charity Aid Foundation, a body that carefully audits Institutions seeking charity. Many large Corporates, both Indian and international, depend on this very important validation to decide on their ability to consider supporting a charity. Apart from opening out possibilities of support from these significant donors this recognition validates our governance and the values that dictate our Organizational practices. I am sure that all our supporters are happy with this reassurance.
Thanks to a very generous donor from Canada, Martek Morgan Finch Inc. represented by its owner Mr. Charlie Oliver, we now have in progress an Early Child Learning Centre (ECLC). This is meant to care for about 25 children of the women working with us in our Stree Shakti Division. It will operate for 7 hours each day for 6 days every week, while the women are busy working. We are proposing to give these children comprehensive Immunization, nutrition and Health care apart from Education. The last is in collaboration with iDiscoveri of Gurgaon. We do believe that this centre will open in February 2010.
With the increase in number of girl children there was a felt need for additional toilets to serve the girl students. About ten donors got together to make available the funds necessary for this small but much needed project. A good modern facility is now available for all our children.
The completion of the campaign for total immunization of all our children and the women working with our SS Division needed a whole time nurse and she is now available. A comprehensive health record is now being created to cover the children, and the women are given supplements with the assistance of the Government in view of the high incidence of anemia. Health care needs to be an important focus.
Bird watching for the children in the Day Boarding Programme was organized in the vicinity of our village, and again on another day they also took part in a similar exercise at Assan Barrage where the winter brings in migratory birds. The Wild Life Institute of India kindly lent us support through their Research fellows who accompanied us and with a Bird Spotter that was lent. We consider these exercises very important to help sensitize our children to the wealth of flora and fauna that we have inherited. |

Purkal Bulletin - December 2009 |

This year the festive season of Christmas and New Year were marked by our children attending an evening of Christmas Carol singing conducted by a certain Rev. Phil. They also attended the Mid Night Mass on Christmas Eve at the St. Francis church. Both these experiences were useful in helping our mostly Hindu children appreciate these festivities of the Christians. Readers might remember that we had earlier helped these children celebrate Id. We do believe that these exposures intended to cultivate tolerance need to go hand in hand with our efforts to provide value education through the culture of Hinduism that is already deep rooted.
The Primary School Day Boarding Programme gathered momentum with the commencement of two more classes, namely classes 3 and 4. These children passed both the tests of poverty and potential as prescribed by our Board. I do believe that we have assembled a lovely group of children whose future we shall attempt to shape. Much hard work preceded this inauguration.
A party of 54 students and teachers left for Gujarat on the 30th December on a trip that will last 15 days. They will be visiting about ten different locations of this Western State of India and experiencing its sights and culture. We are beholden to the Col Abhay Bhatnagar who has been kind enough to help us organize this visit. It will be a memorable trip for all of them.
The students of Class 5 of the PYDS School are being given opportunities to learn about plants, trees and birds through Nature walks and other visits. They are being systematically exposed to these areas of knowledge. These children undertook a visit to Asan Barrage to watch migratory birds, had a trek along the river to watch and learn to identify local birds and had a session on Orchids visiting a garden specializing on these flowers.
In April 2010 when the new academic session begins, we shall be launching an additional subject in our classes 6, 7 and 8 to help students comprehend the subject of Climate Change, Global warming and Climate saving. It will be different from the Environmental Science that is a prescribed subject for the CBSE Syllabus and will be in addition to it. This programme is being funded by British Petroleum, India.
We are glad to announce that The Society has been able to obtain the Membership of Credibility Alliance. This status should help us assemble our donations more easily.
Readers will also be glad to hear that with the assistance of the Uttarakhand Govt. we have recently commenced the free distribution of Iron and multivitamin tablets to all the women of Stree Shakti in a bid to fight the very high incidence of anemia among this group. We shall monitor this condition with a piece of equipment that has now been acquired in house. |

Thanks to the assistance that we received from the army, almost 55 from PYDS consisting of students and staff travelled through Gujarat seeing and learning the history and the geography of the State. The highlight of their visit was their being face to face with a Pride of lions, in the Gir National Park, mountains of butter at the Amul factory and their visit to an Oil refinery at Jamnagar. A presentation on the entire visit is available at http://pydstrips.wordpress.com
The building activity of the ECLC premises and the Stree Shakti display Centre coming up at Purkal was in full swing during the month and we are to have their inauguration on the 27th February. The Governor of Uttarakhand Mrs. Margaret Alva has kindly consented to do the honours. We do wish that every one of our friends would be present on the occasion.
The ECLC with 25 of the children, whose mothers work with Stree Shakti is being got ready and the teachers recruited. We do hope to launch this very useful Institution in late February.
We are happy to announce that with the assistance of British Petroleum India Service pvt. Ltd., we are commencing a Programme known as PEEP (PYDS Environmental Education and Preservation Programme). This is meant for the children admitted into our PYDS Day Boarding Programme in Classes 6, 7 and 8. It will focus on increased awareness and sensitivity to the environment and the potential for individual action. We hope to commence this in April 2010 and this project is fully funded by British Petroleum.
PYDS is now a beneficiary of the Big Tech Programme launched by NASSCOM Federation. Under this programme we have received software at much subsidised rates. This is the key technology philanthropy programme of the technology companies. For a very small fee we now have licensed copies for 50 systems of Window 7, Window XP Professional Upgrade, Microsoft Office 2007 Plus and Quick Heal Antivirus 2010.
We have also been busy vaccinating all the new admissions into our Yuva Shakti and the Stree Shakti Schemes. The month has been used to administer DPT vaccine and Hepatitis B and will be followed by Typhoid. We are recording these in a specially designed Book and this book also contains a record of the health of each of our wards. We propose to complete the vaccination schedule over the next few months. |

The preparations that precede the CBSE Board Examinations and the Annual Examinations for the academic year overtook all other interests during the month. We are hoping that the PYDS School will eventually be able to even out this attitude and get the emphasis on Learning for the sake of it instead of for the ‘Final’ Examinations.
A step towards the establishment of the PYDS School has now been taken with the affiliation of the School for the purposes of running Classes 6, 7 and 8 with the Uttarakhand Board. The infrastructure necessary for the school in terms of additional class rooms, teaching materials and teachers are now being built.
We are witnessing feverish activity preparatory to the ‘Big’ event that we shall host on the 7th of March for the inauguration of the ECLC (Early Childhood Learning Center) and the Display and Sale Centre – two new facilities for the progress of the women of the Stree Shakti.
The Society promoted two new initiatives for the employment of youth from the community completing their schooling. One of them is participation in a scheme launched by Be-Able. This is a scheme launched by Basix Academy and is meant to build skills that can fetch employment. The courses offered by them include repairing of Mobile phones, electronic equipments, Electrical wireman, Bakery management and so on. The other is a programme for technical training of Class XII pass boys and girls. Ashok Leyland Ltd and TVS Srichaka at Rudrapur are sponsoring this “earn whilst you Learn’ Programme.
The skilling of the women of Stree Shakti also acquired a boost with the presence of two ladies from UK volunteering to assist us in building skills among our women. One of them introduced a rare skill known as Locker Needle Craft while another enhanced embroidery skills. Since one of them was also a very successful entrepreneur in the UK there were plenty of useful inputs on the business aspects of our enterprise.
A meeting to remember our very dear friend Mrs. Venkata Vijalakshmi, erstwhile Principal of the Hope Town School was held at PYDS. She was a fine human being and the founder of the MITR Club of that school (an initiate to involve the girl students of that school to contribute their enterprise into the support of the students of PYDS). The meeting resolved to set up an Endowment in her name with PYDS to support a child in perpetuity. |

A long cherished dream of an Early Child Learning Centre to care for the tiny tots belonging to the women working for Stree Shakti was fulfilled on the 7th March when the Governor of the State inaugurated it. Also inaugurated on that day was the Display and Sale Centre for the Stree Shakti products. This is a very tastefully decorated facility for our customers to view our rather classy products.
On the international women’s day 2010 the Governor chose to honour Mrs Chinni Swamy at a special function and present her a cheque of Rs. 50,000 in appreciation.
Shishu Shakti has commenced its existence with about 10 children and three teachers. It will grow gradually as we are able to take on more women with little children for training.
Nine whole days were used by all the teachers of Yuva Shakti and Sishu Shakti for a work shop on teacher training. The nine day workshop conducted by a volunteer, Mr. Harwant Singh, concentrated on reinforcing the concept of helping children ‘Learn’, rather than ‘Teach’ them. This was a great way to set the PYDS Learning Academy start its academic year on the 29th March 2010. We shall recognise this as the first day of our new school in the future.
With our receiving the approval of the Uttarakhand State Board for our commencing classes 6, 7 and 8 at our Learning Centre, we commenced these classes on that day at our School.
The first day of the New School that we have now commenced was marked by six plays in English by all our students in classes 3 to 6 and Class 10. Two volunteers from France, who are very experienced teachers of English, helped the children prepare for the plays by designing and scripting them and thereafter training each of the over 50 participants deliver their lines faultlessly and with feeling. It was a remarkable success. Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Secretary Education and Mr. Kesav Desiraju, Special Secretary, both from the Government of Uttarakhand graced the two days on which the dramas were enacted. |

A congratulatory message was received from the Chief Minister of the State by the Secretary on being nominated as a winner of Spirit of Uttrakhand Award 2010.
To accommodate the new classes that have commenced, we completed the construction of three new commodious class rooms on the campus. We also now have a new Teachers Common Room with provision for all teachers to store their resources. These basic facilities are necessary to keep our school ticking.
The New School’s Sessions is now in full swing with regular classes slated for Sports, dance, music and art. The contract with idiscoveri has commenced and the curriculum designed by them is being implemented with advantage. As a result, the children are learning well. An important feature of the Programme is that the children do not carry heavy satchels home but leave behind at School their school books
The Programme being implemented by the The Global Education & Leadership Foundation is also being implemented in full measure. The teachers responsible for this year’s programme attended a work shop for the purpose conducted by the Foundation.
There were guest speakers this month. Mr. Rajiv Chanchani made a beautiful presentation of the entire Ramayana with the support of pictures of objects of art collected from around the world and Dehra Dun as well. Presenting work that was on wood, stone, canvas, leather, paper and cloth, it spanned several centuries and different schools – a great introduction to art to the students. Mr. Guy Brickley who visited us from England spoke on ‘Education of the Future’ and launched a programme for a sister relationship with his school the Culloden High School at London.
Mrs. Mariah Noah from Colarado made some wonderful pictures of the work at our Society, particularly at the Stree Shakti Centre. These make very interesting viewing and are attached. |

Purkal Bulletin - May 2010 |

This is holiday time after the completion of an academic year and we at PYDS are attempting to use this period to provide the children the fun of leisure along with the wider curriculum of extra academic learning.
Investing in visits to nearby monuments to learn our city’s history was the purpose of our taking the children to a location nearby which is comparatively unknown. An old temple and a Kabristan near our village provided opportunities for sketching, appreciating different architectural styles and learning history first hand.
The entire school had a good time at the Circus that is currently visiting the city. The visit to the energy park has provided food for a lot of thought about new projects that will now be pursued in our Science Laboratory.
The paintings and the articles written by many of our children appeared in the Garhwal Post and this has given each of them significant confidence. The articles are of a high standard.
The New School Council at the Jaswant Modern School, which was installed on the 10th May 2010, includes eleven of our students who have taken positions.
Each of the four Houses at the School has either the Captain or the Vice Captain from among our Protégé. Three of them were also nominated for becoming the School boy/School Girl.
The accent that we have on the overall development of the child is beginning to yield results. Note worthy is the accomplishment of Ms. Swati Sharma, currently in Class 12, who is winning several prizes for art and drawing. We have been encouraging her inclination towards art through special classes for her benefit and we do hope that she will discover herself as an artist or a designer.
The Board of the Society is currently engaged in discovering ways of meeting the important responsibility of helping at least the brighter of our Post 12th students pursue a professional programme. We do need to find some ways of supporting all the children in our care on to a successful Life. Successful entry into an Institution of Excellence such as a prestigious Engineering Institution calls for a Year’s preparatory work and academic help.
This past year we provided support to five of these students by using them as faculty help in our Learning Centre while they prepared for their competition. While some of them are now likely to gain admission, we will have the next challenge of finding the resources necessary to help them go through their targeted professional Institutions. For example one of our students has qualified and secured admission into the Bio-Informatics Programme of the Vellore Institute of Technology and we now need to make the four years Programme accessible to him. |
