Health and Nutrition |
| |
Our effort for proper development and quality education for children begins with an attention to nutrition and healthcare.
Many of the children we work with come from poor families where there is little money to spend on quality food and medical care. Families often eat one meal a day and the children aren’t given proper nutrients for growth. At the same time, the parents are uneducated and often don’t know how to respond when their child is sick.
PYDS is actively involved in the children’s wellbeing. With support for our Fund A Meal and Healthcare Scheme the society is able to provide a daily meal to the students who attend our Learning Center and help care for their medical needs. The society also extends its outreach to the women of Stree Shakti who also receive medical care for theirself. |

The society works closely with qualified doctors in Dehradun who visit the society weekly and ensure the children’s medical needs are met. The doctors help to monitor the children’s health and provide care if needed. The doctors provide updated immunizations and record a medical history for each child. Many of the children suffer from various health conditions and are sent to specialists for further screening and regular care. Young girls are also seen by Gynecologists. Thanks to the help of a local couple who owns a Nursing Home, the Socirty provides the children hospital services, room stay and treatment at concessional rates. Minor cuts and illnesses are also treated by the staff at the Learning Center using |

medicines, Ayurveda and Homeopathy. Over the years the society has also welcomed presentations by various Nutritionists and Health Specialists to share with the students how to take proper care of their health and body. In 2007, the society conducted a Medical Camp for the village that included an eye screening, vaccinations, |

The women of Stree Shakti also participate in the same program which allows them access to doctors and care when needed. With a contribution of just Rs. 600 a year, the women and their family are seen by qualified doctors and treated for any health related problems. The program includes immunizations and access to hospital services, room stay and treatment at concessional rates. |

PYDS makes an effort to make sure that the children at the society receive one healthy meal a day to help stimulate proper development. Thanks to the support for our Fund A Meal and Healthcare Scheme, the society is able to employ three women from the village to prepare a daily nutritious meal of rice, vegetables, dhal and salad for all students and staff at the Learning Center. The society feeds over 160 students, 13 teachers and 6 staff a day. The young children in the BTTP program who attend the Learning Center all day are given special care with a breakfast, lunch and snack provided. |
