Environment Awareness
.
(1.)The road that leads to our Learning Center is lit up by solar powered lights.
.
(2.)We meet the water needs of our society through a rain harvesting system that stores water in a large tank.
.
(3.)Trees are planted around the Learning Center in the name of donors.
.
(4.)Eleven bins were constructed in the community for collection of plastic waste in the area. An additional five more bins have been constructed around our Learning Center for segregating waste. Degradables are collected and put into a manure pit meant for humus collection.
.
(5.)No Cost Chill Container: Using the principle that evaporation causes cooling, two bins for vegetable storage have been constructed.
.
(6.)The children conduct regular environmental clean-ups and visit homes to educate the community about proper waste disposal.

Community Development
.
It’s our aim to help strengthen the entire community through our initiative.  Our efforts to educate the children in the community have helped to mobilize families and increase their awareness about the importance of education, health and the environment. By serving as an example for creating social change, we can help lead a movement that will impact future generations. We discuss with the community their concerns and organize programs to meet their needs

Health and Sanitation: In 2007, the society hosted a Medical Camp for the community to give attention to the community’s medical needs. Over 5 qualified doctors from Dehradun and Delhi came to provide eye examinations, etc. – explain what they do, provide immunizations, educate about hygiene, etc. The doctors provided free consultations and medicines. We are planning to issue each of our students with a Health Booklet which will contain all their medical details and history.

In collaboration with the ADOPT charity in Delhi, in 2007 the society constructed 52 toilets in homes and villages around the

communities we serve. Many families often live in homes without toilets and are forced to relieve their self outside in the mountain forests. Not only is this unsanitary and degrading for women; it is dangerous; many lives have been lost in the villages due to snake bites. The women now have privacy and are more knowledgeable about proper sanitation. The society plans to construct another 300 toilets with ADOPT in the future.

Employment It’s our aim to provide support to families living in this rural community. PYDS employs local men and women in jobs that provide food, transportation, carpentry and maintenance for the society. We help to ensure a steady income for people and their families and as a result, the entire community is strengthened by our activities.
